NOTE: Today would have been my brother’s 61st birthday. He passed away in 2017 of brain and lung cancer. Part of the story below is true and part fictional. I’m not sure which is which right now because my eyes are a bit blurry…
Two months prior to his death, Barry wanted popcorn shrimp.
His brother, Dustin, was in town to spend time with him, knowing he didn’t have long on this earth.
Twenty-two days earlier the doctors had diagnosed Barry with Stage IV brain and lung cancer. Despite treatment options that might prolong his life a few more months, Barry chose to spend it at home with family nearby and not suffering more than he already had.
As Dustin drove him around, Barry said, “You can’t go sailing on the moon’s surface and call it a day, Little Bro. Even I know that. It’s just not right. Batten up the hatches and full speed ahead. We’re in for the ride of our lives! Just remember that I told you that first.”
The state of delirium was apparent. Dustin looked at Barry’s son, who just shook his head. He had heard this kind of talk before from his father.
“What’re you hungry for, Big Bro?” Dustin asked.
“I’d like me some popcorn shrimp from that grocery store right over there. They make the best in these parts.”
Dustin looked at the son, and the son nodded. It was in fact Barry’s favorite food and from that store as well.
“Well, popcorn shrimp it is then. I’ll keep my weapon holstered this time.”
“What’re you talking about, Dust? You feeling okay?” Barry asked.
“Yeah, just checking to see if you’re paying attention.”
“That mother of ours sure raised a strange one.”
The banter between the brothers continued until Dustin parked.
“Want to go in with us, Big Bro?” Dustin asked.
“No. No, I think I’ll stay out here. I’m a little tired right now. Take the boy in with you. Exercise’ll do him good.”
Barry knew.
The son knew.
Dustin knew.
They’d have a few more days with him, but for now, Barry just needed to close his eyes and rest.
