“What do you think, kids? Think Mom’ll want us to get the bacon or sausage?” Joe Confer asked his toddlers.
“Sosh,” Mindy said.
“Sausage it is then, Mindy. Which do you think she’d like better; smoked hickory, mesquite, regular, orrr maple flavor?”
It was Brandon’s turn to answer. “Skeet.”
“Good choice, Brandon. I like that,” Joe said as he tossed one of each package into his cart. “I’m glad I have you two along. You’re a great help.”
“Elp,” said Mindy.
“Yep, elp. Right. Now, comes the good part. We get to check out. Mrs. Terry is always so nice to you two.”
“Ice,” Brandon said.
“Mrs. Terry!” Joe said as he unloaded his items on to the conveyor belt.
“Ah Joe. You brought me my two favorite sweeties.”
Mindy clapped and Brandon smiled.
“Oh, I’ve got a treat for you two,” Mrs. Terry said.
Brandon and Mindy knew the word treat, especially coming from Mrs. Terry.
She handed Joe two mini-cupcakes wrapped in plastic. He would know what to do with them at the appropriate time.
“You know you’re spoiling them, Mrs. T.”
“Yeah, I know it. Let’s just say they’re my adopted grandkids. Who else am I gonna spoil?”
After Joe checked out and paid for his goods, he was walking towards the door with the kids. He turned back to wave good bye to Mrs. Terry.
“And who do we have here?” Mrs. Terry asked the next customer in line. “My three favorite sweeties. And have I got a treat for you three today.”
He looked back; what a shame. Much like watching sausage being made--takes away from the enjoyment of the tasting experience.
