The mercury topped 100 for the tenth day in a row, but Samantha and Kate wanted to keep up their walking streak when it wasn’t raining. Most of the time, they walked in the cool of the morning or right before the sun went down to avoid walking in the unshaded sun.
Kate said, “They say you can fry an egg when the temperature gets to 104 or 105.”
“Really? Why would anyone want to do that?”
“No reason. It just proves how hot it is, is all?”
“Isn’t that a waste of eggs?” Samantha asked. “I mean, the price of eggs has skyrocketed in the past year. Unbelievable actually. Almost can’t afford to feed the family anymore. I don’t know why anyone would toss down an egg just for an experiment. I wonder how many times and how many people did that before they figured out 104 was the exact temperature to fry an egg?”
“Dunno,” Kate said. “Just making conversation.”
“You hungry?”
“Yeah, I am. Why do you ask?”
