They lay in the hammocks as the world passed them by, Mike in the upper hammock and Candace occupying the one closest to the ground. They spoke of life and politics and health and family and relationships, and of course, the weather.
The Maxims had been dreaming of this moment for months. The kids were with her parents, bills were all paid, and no one was going to interrupt their long-awaited vacation.
This vacation was just for the two of them, exploring, wondering, dreaming. No complaints, no traffic, and certainly no hustle and bustle of daily life. It was an exciting time to be alive and dreaming about life.
“Think we’ll look back on this time and wonder what we were thinking, Cand?”
“Are you kidding? I know we will. I don’t think we’ll regret it one bit but it’s definitely one for the memory books. And maybe even the record books. Wish there was a way to set up the camera to capture the moment without it looking like a selfie.”
“Maybe there is.”
Mike rolled off his hammock and ran up to someone from the resort and asked if he could snap their picture.
The man obliged and snapped four shots of the Maxims lounging in their hammocks.
“Mind if I take one, you know, for the missus?” the man asked.
“Sure,” Candy said. “Why not?”
The man pulled out his smart phone and snapped another two shots, this time with him in both.
“Ain’t no one in my family believe the two of you relaxing in your parkas in the middle of a blizzard in Buffalo. Now I’ve got some proof. Thanks,” he said, shaking his head as he walked away.
“Think it’s time to go in, Candace, m’lady, and get close to the resort fireplace with some nice hot cocoa?”
“Yeah, I was thinking the same thing,” said Candy. “This planning and dreaming is fine when you’re not freezing your…toes off. Maybe tomorrow.”
“Sure, tomorrow.”
