The Old Man envied The Old Rabbit in so many ways. Not needing to work, pay taxes, get out of bed, or know how to fix things around the house were some.
Each morning when The Old Man sauntered out into the open air to walk, he saw The Old Rabbit resting under a bush, not moving, not even attempting to move at the sight of The Old Man.
It could very well be that The Old Rabbit was going blind, deaf, and lame, something The Old Man was just now experiencing himself. In that sense, The Two were alike. They were survivors as well as being long in the tooth.
They had both been through societal upheavals, calamities, and the Disco era. Their kind had surpassed them in the ability to get things done, but The Two had a vast wealth of experience and wisdom they could rely on. That was their claim to fame. Of course, The Old Man could articulate these similarities and differences, while The Old Rabbit sat under the bush each morning, noon, and night, nibbling on anything he could scrounge. It was an easy life, and an enviable one.
And yet, The Old Man could see a scenario where The Old Rabbit envied him. No worries about food, can come and go as he pleased, and a solid roof over his head every night. What’s not to envy?
But with all this envying going on between these two, how would The Old Man and The Old Rabbit get a chance to spread wisdom and show off their experience to the next generation?
