Ava heard the faint voice from the elevator announcing the door was closing and the elevator was going up.
“Grandpa, didya hear that?” she said as she scanned the elevator control panel.
“Hear what, Ava?”
“Sounds like the lady is inside the elevator.”
“No, no, Sweetie. She’s not in the elevator. It’s like a recording. You know like when I call and leave a message on the phone, and then you replay it later? I’m not in the phone, am I?”
The elevator dinged twice and the voice said, “First Floor, Lobby.”
“No, you wouldn’t fit, but I’ve seen tiny ladies before.”
“Well, then, thank her for announcing our floors,” Grandpa said.
“Thank you, nice lady,” Ava said. “Like that, Grandpa?”
“Just like that, Ava. And one of these days real soon, she may be able to talk back to you.”
